Pariah Dog is a creative documentary focusing on several eccentric dog lovers in Kolkata, India. Shot over two-and-a-half years, the film paints a kaleidoscopic picture of the city of Kolkata, seen through the prism of four outsiders and the dogs they love. These men and women have found meaning and purpose in their shared mission to care for these neglected street dogs, who have existed in the towns and villages of India for thousands of years. For some this mission is enough, for others, dreams of a better life are always near.

Pariah Dog is generously sponsored by Wellness Pet Supplies.

Director's Statement

In 2013, my friend Aditi Sircar invited me to move to Kolkata to make a film. I had been traveling to Kolkata on and off for years, and for years I had been fascinated by the city’s street dogs. Their living conditions were often terrible, but it was their loneliness that spoke to me. I thought of making a city symphony film, a dog’s-eye view of Kolkata, somehow touching on what it means to get lost in such a crowded city, in plain sight of everyone. But as I began filming, the project quickly shifted. Through my local friends, I had developed a network of Bengali street dog activists, and each of them had a story about a character in their neighborhood who fed or looked after street dogs. Set apart from the activist community, these were lonely, eccentric people whose lives were deeply intertwined with those of the dogs. The breed name of the majority of the dogs on the street in Kolkata is the “Indian Pariah,” one of the oldest breeds of dogs in the world. But these people were also Pariahs in some ways -often lonely, unfulfilled, and somehow outside the mainstream of Bengali society.
