Director's Statement

Before the pandemic started, I was assigned my last film assignment for my 8th-grade year. It was pretty loose and I had the freedom to choose what I wanted to do. I decided I wanted to do a documentary. My Uncle has Down syndrome and wanted to somehow do a documentary in honor of him. We were supposed to go to Florida for Spring Break and I had decided I would possibly like to shoot the film then. But, I realized it would be a lot to do around other fun activities we had planned so my mom said she would introduce her friend, Blair Williamson, to me. He also has Down syndrome and he starred in my mom’s movie years ago before I was born.

I met Blair and Susie the weekend before the pandemic and knew they would be perfect for a sweet love story. But, then COVID started and we all stayed home for months. School ended and the project was never done. I still wanted to finish it but I didn’t quite know how. Then, my mom introduced me to David Zimmerman who had planned to enter the Easterseals Disability Film Challenge with a documentary on Blair and Susie with his own archived footage of the couple. We decided to collaborate, my Mom and Dad joined the team and I knew I found a new home for the film. The film was back on its feet and because of the time constraint of the challenge, I knew it was going to be done. But, fast!

Then David introduced me to Chris and Trevor, the co-composers, and they made the film complete. I would never have gotten the music they created if I had made it at the school. The music is so important to their love story and made the documentary better than I could have imagined. This has been such a fun experience and although not what I imagined…I would say that is how a true documentary is made!
