Synopsis: On March 29th, 1969, with 20 minutes left on their shift, two Detroit Police officers see a man standing outside the New Bethel Church with a rifle and decide to make one last stop. One officer is brutally shot and killed, the other is shot twice and narrowly escapes. For the first time in 50 years, the surviving officer takes us back to the shooting, the aftermath, and to one of Detroit’s biggest trials where he faces the men who killed his partner and almost killed him.

Scout 10-5 documents the history and the tragedy of the 1969 New Bethel Church Shooting where one police officer is brutally killed and another narrowly escapes after being shot twice. It explores how the racial tensions and hate that men can have for one another impacts both sides of the racial divide.
David Van Wie started making commercials for Big Brother Big Sisters, Catholic Charities, and local companies over 10 years ago. He released his first documentary Detroit Under STRESS is 2018 which captures interviews with police officers that were part of one of the most controversial decoy police units ever put on the street. Detroit Under STRESS, narrated by C. Thomas Howell, received 25 laurels and 15 awards. David released his second documentary Scout 10-5 in 2021 that tell the story of the 1969 New Bethel Church Shooting. He is currently working with Anthony Zuiker, the creator of CSI, is in pre-production on his third documentary, and has just released a new YouTube Channel called Patriot Plates, where he stops cars with veteran license plates and asks them to share one story of their time in service.
