Director's Statement

I am a sucker for romantic comedies. Perhaps that’s a side effect from growing up in the ‘90s? Or maybe it’s just in my DNA. Whatever the case, there is something fascinating to me about how relationships happen and the various things that stand in their way.

This curiosity led me to develop the script for See You Next Christmas. My other main source of inspiration was the annual holiday party that I’ve thrown for the past fifteen years. In that time I’ve seen my friends mature and grow, as well as fall in and out of relationships. We all have had our fair share of ups and downs over the years, but I wanted to explore how those changes would manifest over the course of six years when an audience is only present for the party (like some of my guests that I only see once a year!)

After a successful equity crowdfunding campaign, we shot the film in the first two months of 2020. Little did we know that a mere three weeks after wrap, the world would shut down due to Covid19. Not only am I grateful that we got to shoot when we did (a movie centered on party scenes would be very challenging to shoot in a covid world), but I came to realize that the message of the film resonated even more in our post-lockdown world… The film is a celebration of being together with those you love. I hope this film can feel like the big hug we all need after 2020!
