Synopsis: Wren (19) arrives at a public psychiatric hospital, expecting to get dismissed once the doctor deems her sane. Wouldn’t he see that she doesn’t belong here? Only, the doctor has no interest in her story. As her stay elongates, she finds an unexpected friend in another patient who opens her eyes to the sad truth that she is not the only fish out of water… no one belongs here. They are all trapped, waiting to be freed. Wren’s family files a grievance on her behalf, allowing her the freedom that all the other patients are waiting for.

The human mind is delicate. To be caged and punished does not repair the mind. It is humanity, our relationships, that lifts and guides us to the light.
This story was drawn closely from a childhood friend who was put into a public pysch ward during her sophomore year of college, as a supposed cure to her depression. I struggle to understand why we put people looking for help, who may feel mentally fragile, into environments that stimulate more trauma.
Sheltered explores how we, in the outside world, are sheltered from them. As they are deemed unfit for society.
… Until we become one of them.
Then, we realize we are all the same. And that the best way to help is to listen.
This film shows a bridge between two people, two patients, whose friendship soothes the mind more than any prescription the doctor can prescribe.
