Director's Statement

This film is for my family – my uncle who has Fox News playing on 3 TVs in his Louisiana homestead and my aunt who writes letters to the NY Times praising Fauci and Biden. This film is for anyone who feels pulled apart by the political polarization of our current time. This film is for everyone who survived 2020. It does not intend to solve all of our political discord. Rather, it investigates how we can co-exist in an America where it seems harder than ever to find shared views of our future. I wanted to make this film as soon as Trump was elected in 2016. I spent Thanksgiving with my family in New Orleans and we talked at length about Trump, Clinton, #MeToo, gun control, immigration, climate change, and government’s role in our lives. We didn’t agree on much, but while we were stuck at the dinner table together we had to listen to each other. It was tense, but the thread of care kept us in conversation. I left that weekend wondering if there was any way folks from across the political divide could find common ground. I feel deeply grateful for the brave filmmakers who made this with me, and for the activists who opened their hearts and lives to us. As dark as it may seem sometimes, the future of our country is in our hands, and the only way to heal our nation is to keep in conversation with those who don’t agree with us.
