Synopsis: “24 Behaviors” is a 35-minute documentary featuring world-renowned expert in equine orthopedics, Dr. Sue Dyson, and her research on how “bad” horse behavior can actually be an early indicator of pain. The film educates horse lovers on how to spot the early signs of pain while taking viewers on an emotional “ride” through the eyes of a young girl who loves her horse and will stop at nothing to try to figure out how to make her comfortable.

Director's Statement

It’s been an honor to work with Dr. Dyson and Jody Ambose and Megan Phillips from The Train With Trust Project. Dr. Dyson asked me after we had been working together for months “why did you decide to do this project?” and I said “because I believe you.” Sue’s meticulous research verifies what so many riders feel in their gut…that something is wrong. The horse industry tends to blame the horse, when so often their resistance is due to pain. We hoped that through telling the story of Lauren and her beloved Galina, we could help people consider first “is it pain?” before punishing the horse. We also hope that viewers will start to recognize behaviors that indicate pain before the injury develops into a limp and/or becomes chronic.

Director's Bio

Padma Video founder, videographer, and editor, Kathryn Lauritzen, has been “horse-crazy” since she was a little girl. Kathryn spent much of her youth riding her bike to the barn and taking care of her horses. She later showed hunter/jumper with her thoroughbred gelding “San-ti.” After college, Kathryn entered radio as a rock DJ and spent 30 years on the air in markets such as San Francisco, Boston, Washington D.C., New York and San Jose. During that time, she created hundreds of hours of audio production which naturally lead to her passion for video production. Through Padma Video, Kathryn creates educational, marketing and documentary films specializing in the human-animal bond while illuminating the strong, beautiful and often complicated relationships between humans and animals. Kathryn shoots on a Sony FS7, edits in Premier Pro, Adobe Audition, Photoshop and Lightroom. Padma Video is named after… what else? A horse, of course. Padma was Kathryn’s beloved thoroughbred mare of 24 years.
