Synopsis: A nine-minute comedy short about a young German man (Otto Rubschlager) who comes to Idaho to learn the art of flyfishing after reading about the exploits of legendary American sportsman, Hildebrand Richwine, in a German fly fishing magazine called Das Fischer. Otto arrives at a wild Idaho river and, to his surprise, bumps into the celebrity fisherman from the mag. Otto struggles to learn the craft and is intimidated by his flashy, new neighbor. Is the great Hildrebrand just a showy, douchebag? Or is there more to this seemingly arrogant, over-compensating, outdoorsman?

Director's Statement

A lot of outdoor films are carried by soft music and dramatic slow-mo or they philosophically delve into the “why we do stuff outside” thread. Those are great, but I just wanted to do something less serious. No dialogue. No drones. No slow-mo. No fancy scheisse. Emphasis on story, sound effects, strong characters, quirky props, and unique locations. Well composed shots with minimal bells and whistles, just a few quick whip pans and cuts and some ridiculous scenes. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea but I hope some of you enjoy watching it as much as we enjoyed making it. Can’t thank the crew enough! – Ben Herndon

Director's Bio

Ben is a freelance photographer and writer based in rugged north Idaho. His work has been used by Runner’s World, Outside, Climbing, Rock & Ice, Sunset, NRS, The Nature Conservancy, and Mystery Ranch. In 2012, Climbing Magazine picked him as one of the top three climbing photographers under 30, which was sort of like being named one of the best Olympic pommel horse gymnasts over 60.

He is most content photographing people in nature — whether conservation, adventure, casual recreation, or moments in-between.

“Das Fischer” is his first serious attempt at utilizing the neglected “moving picture” functions of his camera.
