Director's Statement

I was sitting on a swing amidst high trees at a ranch covered in fog. I looked up and saw a very powerful image with dark leaves, high ropes and a pale sky.
I felt watched from above.
That feeling brought me back to my childhood. As a child, I was lonely yet never felt truly alone.
This film honors that chapter of my life and the woods that watched me grow.

Director's Bio

Damiana was born in Mexico City yet was raised in the countryside which led her to prefer green over grey and silence over noise.
She graduated Summa Cum Laude from Universidad Iberoamericana with a BA in Communication Sciences and a minor in Film.

As a recipient of the prestigious Mexican scholarship FONCA-CONACYT, Damiana moved to Los Angeles to pursue an MFA in Film Directing at the American Film Institute Conservatory.

She was selected as an emerging Mexican filmmaker by the program Tomorrow’s Filmmakers Today in collaboration with HBO and the HFPA and attended Cine Qua Non’s Lab with the support of The Academy.
Her award winning first short film, L as in Light, screened at numerous film festivals around the world and during quarantine, Damiana shot a short piece with her phone, within the four walls of her apartment, that reflects the mood and spirit of what will become her debut feature.
Aurum, the tone poem, streamed on Pantaya and Dish Latino.
Damiana’s poetic visual storytelling focuses on female led, magical realism narratives that
hunt for the sublime through the ethereal, the profound and the philosophical.

Quotes

A consistent vision runs through L as in Light. It is a rich perspective - within the few minutes we spend with these characters we become aware of their world, their life, their dreams, and perhaps our own lives. There is much to admire with this film. - The Monkey Bread Tree Film Awards, http://themonkeybreadtree.com/spring-2017/

Montero’s cinematography is delicate and soft. There is also a grand beauty to it too, she gives us the kind of images which haunt us. It is very similar to the work Blasco Giurato did for Cinema Paradiso. - The Monkey Bread Tree Film Awards, http://themonkeybreadtree.com/spring-2017/
