Director's Statement

I believe that we live in a world that is perceived as highly connected: we have the internet, facebook, instagram, snapchat, all of the various ways to witness each other cyberly, but not necessarily experience each other on a real, visceral level. The Four Walls of Olivia Pell investigates what it is to be truly encapsulated in a singular world. Because of trauma induced agoraphobia, we see a woman who lives only within her four walls- the four walls of her apartment. But aren’t we always there? Even as completely “connected” human beings we hunger for connection- why she listens to her neighbors. Even as completely “confident” human beings we hunger for autonomy- why she wants to stay alone, exactly where she is. I was drawn to this project because it felt like the exact microcosm in which we all live in this day and age. Forever wanting love and connection and forever afraid to find it.
