Synopsis: Walter and Loretta tried and failed to escape their cult compound before their daughter Esmee’s 13th birthday, knowing that the Rev (their cult leader) intends to take Esmee as his fourth wife. Today is the day when Rev won’t take no for an answer. Today is the day that Walter, Loretta and Esmee make their final stand. Devotion has its price.

Inspired by dozens of true stories, I wrote The Sacrifice upon learning that there were and are, to this day, marriage statutes in over 38 states of the US in which children are married off to adults with a parent’s and/or judge’s consent. I knew that I had to shine a light on this barbaric and predatory practice. So I focused my storytelling skills on writing and making my film-directing debut so as to bring public awareness to this cruel practice. I’d hoped that by telling Esmee’s story, the predators who keep these statutes on the books, would be exposed and stopped. Not long after The Sacrifice was screened, in 2008, a polygamous cult compound headed by Warren Jeffs was raided by Texas police, and over 400 children were rescued. In 2010, Warren Jeffs, (who’d been imprisoned and then set free in Utah) was extradited to Texas, arrested for sexual assault of a child and aggravated sexual assault of a 12-year-old child whom he had married. He was arrested, indicted, prosecuted, imprisoned for life. He remains in prison to this day.
