Director's Statement
‘Ball and Chain’ presented an opportunity to specialise and experiment with a restricted dynamic of characters and space. For a film to focus on two people in the one location is something I feel is very challenging for young filmmakers in a narrative sense. Each aspect of the characters’ journeys needs to be crafted and directed so deliberately in order to create the gravitas that makes a film worth watching. I wanted the viewer to be drawn into a world so aesthetically familiar that the devil in the details would interrogate the human tendency to ignore what lies beneath the surface of people living right next door to them.
