Director's Statement

Nothing is ever as it seems, and life will play you a curveball just when you least expect it. Soundproof is a psychologically stirring 10-minute short film that explores the effects of miscommunication in a relationship and the mistrust that arises from that. But beyond the surface, director, Gabriela Lima’s film highlights the thin line between love and devotion and violence against women—a story she knows well as a native of Brazil, a country famous for its sexism and machismo.

Like most projects produced in the last two years, Soundproof has faced obstacles. On top of the global pandemic, the release of the film was delayed after the passing of our main actress, Carmen Fitzgerald shortly after wrapping. While there had been conversations about shelving the project, we decided that our majority women led production crew and the film’s unconventional story telling approach needed their shine. Soundproof was a student project shot on a small soundstage over Easter Break in Orlando, FL. It is our hope that our short film sparks conversations about jealousy, communication, love, and violence.
