Director's Statement
This film is inspired by one of my strongest memories of my Catholic school education. I wanted to explore a fragile moment in an adolescent girl’s life- when she becomes aware of herself, her body in space, and the responsibility of womanhood. How do we learn what it means to be “lady like”? This story is about the desire to be liked, the awkwardness of change, and how significant lessons can be learned in small moments of private humiliation. What happens if you don’t have strong female role models? How are the ways of womanhood passed down? This film digs into the standards of beauty and behavior, and ultimately boundaries enforced, that deeply embed how we educate young girls. It poses the question- what compromises do we make to fit in?
