A collection of Music themed short documentaries.

SHORT FILM:
SongCraft Presents: Dom Flemons
In this half hour show, Grammy-nominated songwriter Dom Flemons and host Ben Arthur explore the complicated legacy of blackface artist Emmet Miller, and write a song inspired by his life and work. Flemons, who is a founding member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, describes how important Emmet Miller’s work is to the development of America’s musical tradition. Arthur and Flemons meet up at the Grand Opera House, where Miller first performed as a child, and write a brand new song, before performing it in front of a live audience that night at the legendary Capricorn Studios.

FEATURE FILM:
Dusty Groove: The Sound of Transition

In “Dusty Groove: The Sound of Transition” Chicago vinyl buyer Rick Wojcik walks us into the homes and stories of strangers, digging through their jazz, soul, and hip hop records. Each seller shares a common reason: they face a major life transition.

The documentary is a collection of intimate narratives, akin to a record album of songs. About love, loss, and our personal connection to music.

The feature film is preceded by the Short Documentary, SONGCRAFT PRESENTS: DOM FLEMONS.

Director's Statement

What does a life transition look like, sound like?

What do people do on the cusp of a life transition? What do they choose to shed? Comics, cookbooks, stamps, coins, magazines, dolls, action figures, vinyl records… and why?

In this documentary you will meet people in different phases of transition — a former hip hop dj, a punk rock completist collector, a daughter finally letting go of her dad’s storage lockers, and many more. What they have in common is they have chosen to say goodbye to prized record collections.

Come listen to the sounds of their transitions, and witness them emerge forever changed.
