Director's Statement

Our film began four years ago on the streets of streets of Connecticut with a crew of three, two DLSR cameras, one crazy actor and an even crazier idea we wanted to explore: what would it be like to show up in today’s technology obsessed world if you hadn’t been on Earth since the 80’s? It was madness, it was fun, and while had no story at the time, we discovered a fascinating character… Thorp.

After months of discussions, the writer wrote and wrote…and rewrote, until eventually, we had our comedic-sci-fi-fish-out-of-water-coming-of-age-dramatic-thriller-love-story that has a hell of a lot of heart.

Streaming channels have a never-ending inventory of films made by the numbers that one can watch and forget ten minutes later, but Thorp is an unabashedly unique film. Sure, our main character is an alien, but this film is really about what it means to be be human today.

What does it mean to live in a world where people we shows on iPhones in the confines of a gym bathroom stall? Where people fall down manholes while texting on the street? Where we raise children who spend more time with their iPads than with each other? How can we connect to each other if we can’t put our devices down?

Thorp is not telling you to throw away your iPhone, iPad, or MacBook. They’re expensive. And we don’t want the liability. However, we do hope that after watching our film our audiences will look to their friend, partner or loved one and be a little more present… before they look back to their devices. We hope this film helps people celebrate the life they have in front of them.
