Synopsis: The six-minute short film Seele aus Stein (Soul of Stone) revolves around Bernd Arnold, the iconic
barefoot climber from Saxony, who has logged over 980 first ascents in his 67 years.
Now facing the phase of decline, he reflects on the power of psyche in overcoming
fear. Before mainstream climbing brands, sponsorships, and magazines, Bernd was
out on the rock pushing his limits. With no chalk, no protection, no shoes, and no
rope, he has constantly walked the line between life and death. Why? As Camus once
said, “The struggle itself toward the heights is enough to fill a man’s heart.”

Director's Bio

Wanting to bridge the gap between work and play, Taylor founded Rainier Films in 2014 to combine his passion of the outdoors with his love for filmmaking. He recently graduated the film school at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, and his first short film “Soul of Stone” has already received some attention in the outdoor adventure film world. He’s not afraid to blur the lines of professional and casual, as he searches for glimpses of humanity through the art of storytelling.

Quotes

Bernd Arnold is a living legend, known for his first ascents in Saxony and his preference for barefoot free-soloing. Bernd is a peer of Wolfgang Gullich, Kurt Albert and Dietrich Hasse. With Kurt Albert, he climbed Trango Tower and nearly lost his life when he fell into a crevasse, but miraculously survived. He was also part of the first ascent of “Riders on the Storm” (VII 7c A2), on the Central Tower, East Face, of the Torres del Paine. Point is, he’s a badass who is still climbing, and still practicing his art of free soloing barefoot. This new short from Rainier Films is both interesting and captures the personality behind one of the climbing world’s greatest living legends. Check it out. - Andrew Bisharat, Evening Sends
