Director's Statement

This film began while on a CAPS fellowship in film in 1975. All footage was exposed in 1974 to 1977. We were filming in an empty playground next door. The hells angels lived across the street and wanted the lot for themselves. 4 AM a policeman knocks of my door tom say: “There’s been a murder in the building.” A friend of the transvestite downstairs had been knifed to death, and castrated. A week later, 4 am, the room is full of smoke, the lights don’t work. I go to the door, peek out – flames are coming up the stairs. I get out on the fire escape over to next building and down on street to watch the building get gutted. A lot of the film was destroyed, encrusted with dirt and water damaged. I moved and the project was put away until recently when I found that a lot of material could be digitally restored with new methods unavailable before. I wrote a beginning and ending and an entirely new film was created from the ashes of the old in 2022.
