Director's Statement
A “proustian moment” is described as the sudden, involuntary evocation of an autobiographical memory, including a range of related sensory and emotional expressions.
A small pleasure can offer us an oasis during troubling times. Since I was a child, visions of a destitute world have haunted me. How would we cope as humans without any hope of respite? I wrote and directed this film about a woman holding onto her humanity in a desperate world. What would she do in order to save the memory of better times?
Memoria was shot at Fort Tilden in New York City on February 15 & 16, 2020. Immediately after principle photography, Covid-19 was about to change our lives. The pickup shoot was on March 15 the day NYC shut down. I edited the film under lockdown and managed the departments of post production (Visual Effects, Music, Sound Mix and Color Correction) remotely. I lived blocks away from Elmhurst Hospital the epicenter of the epicenter at the time. It was uncertain and frightening, but I remained singularly focused on completing the film.
