Director's Statement

Inside jokes are the V.I.P. section of comedy. They’re exclusive and intimate and once you’re in, you’re in baby! The power of an in-joke lies in the understanding that no one outside of an elite few could possibly comprehend what is so funny about it. An in-joke selects its own audience with its one standing principle: you had to be there. If you were there at the genesis of the joke, you understand the joke. Sure, you can try to bring others in. You can explain to them what happened. Sometimes they’ll even let out a sad, desperate-to-be-in-on-it laugh. But deep down, all parties know that the only people who will ever appreciate the moment for what it is are the people who were there for the moment.

The title of our film ‘This Is What I Look Like Naked’ refers to an inside joke between the main character Zoe and her childhood best friend Nevin. Years after the genesis of said joke, Nevin adapts it into a mega-hit pop song and a go-to favorite of the customers at the karaoke bar Zoe now works at halfheartedly. Suddenly, something that was intimate and exclusive is being celebrated by millions of people who don’t get it like she does. People who weren’t there for the moment.

We believe this story will resonate with anyone feeling nostalgic for old friendships that have since faded. At the very least, we hope to get the song ‘This Is What I Look Like Naked’ stuck in the head of anyone who watches.
