Synopsis: Alberta #3 is a meditation on family, heredity, madness, and time. It is a body of collected field notes of artist and writer Bradley Necyk as he explored his experience as an intergenerational being—finding a line from his ancestors through himself to his children, his children’s children, and his children’s children’s children. He experiences and reflects on madness through both his doctoral research at a psychiatric hospital and his own mania following that research. A collaboration between director Kyle Terrence and writer Bradley Necyk, this film weaves larger, longer stories of madness and time.

Director's Statement

Visual artist and writer Bradley Necyk approached me with writing he had developed during his downtime in a conference in Arizona. This writing was an auto-ethnographic collection of memories and field notes that reflected on topics of madness, parenthood and inter-generational connectedness through the conceptual lens of his own mania. After hearing him read his powerful thoughts out loud, I knew it deserved a kind of visual story telling that would not take away from his authentic voice. I asked Bradley to perform his own reflections in what would become Alberta #3.

Director's Bio

Kyle Terrence is a visual artist and filmmaker from Alberta, Canada. Whether costumed and crawling through Boreal swamps, lowering himself into a frozen river while sporting action cameras, or undergoing performances of hyper-masculinity, his research practice has settled into the multimodal search for experiences beyond the pale of conventional forms of knowledges. Drawing upon multiple methodologies including film, photography, performance, writing, and narrative, Terrence looks to carve a network of aesthetic and experiential pathways between his varying research outputs. Terrence is committed to exploring the often overlapping themes of climate change, masculinity, and eschatology through the lens of video narrative
