Director's Statement
‘Be Good’ is inspired by my own personal struggle with an eating disorder. I wrote and shot it during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. Being isolated in quarantine reminded me of the confinement I felt whilst in my eating disorder. It is a powerful illness that keeps its sufferers hidden and alone.
As an Arab woman, I noticed that the representation of eating disorders on film and TV is very slim. It moved me to create a film following a Middle Eastern woman who’s defining characteristic isn’t centered around her race but rather, centered around her mental health.
In sharing this story I hope to raise awareness around the violent nature of eating disorders, mental health as it relates to a woman of color and the danger in glorifying diet culture. I hope to help someone suffering silently recognize themselves on screen and know they are not alone.
