Director's Statement
I was drawn to this script on many levels. I was single until my 40th birthday, so I’ve been on a lot of dates. In Lisa’s story I could feel the familiar craving for connection coming from Jen, the protagonist.
As a child of an alcoholic, telling the story about someone in recovery also struck a chord with me. I wanted to make sure what we did felt truthful. In setting the film in a bar/restaurant, we made sure to film the scene with the bar behind Jen. It was a fitting metaphor. Was her problem behind her? Or was it hovering just over her shoulder, coloring her interactions with other people?
I also found it compelling that both characters are flawed, each with their own issues and needs. And how, just as in real life, expectations shift to fit circumstances.
