Psyched!-Pilot
The doors are closed. There are no more screenings of this film.
Synopsis: ‘Psyched!’ is a medical drama, in the vein of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and ‘New Amsterdam’, with a focus
entirely on mental health topics.
The protagonist is Dr Alex Ionescu, a nonconforming, out of the ordinary consultant psychiatrist
and Romanian gay woman. During the series there is an evident contrast between her caring,
organised and knowledgeable professional side and her messy promiscuous love life stemming
from growing up in a homophobic Romanian village and struggling with gay shame and self hatred.
Will she be able to open herself to love as the season progresses, or will she shy away from it and
continue with her superficial lifestyle?
Through her eyes we meet many of the patients as well as the group of staff she works with at a
Community Mental Health Team in London. The staff includes junior doctor Dr Patel and a diverse
group of nurses, social workers, students and psychologists.
The patients are from many different walks of life and they have a wide range of mental health
diagnosis, including psychotic illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar affective disorder, OCD, PTSD,
depression, anxiety, erotomania and personality disorder.
In the pilot episode, we meet Tom who has relapsed and is suffering from persecutory delusions and auditory hallucinations. Dr Patel starts his first day at work as a doctor, joining the Community
Mental Health Team and interacting with different staff members and learning the ins and outs of
the team. He reviews his first patient suffering from side effects of his anti depressive medication and puts together a well thought plan. Aisha suffers from obsessive compulsive disorder which has a strong effect on her life and her family.
At the end of the long days work, Alex arrives home to find a surprise waiting for her.
