Music Industry Whistleblowers: Pioneers of Atlanta

This panel discussion will be about the music industry’s first missteps about the Disco era. It also reveals how Atlanta became the most relevant market for launching new Artist, new songs, and quality entertainment.

Terra Renee (Moderator)
For the past 22 years, Founder and President of African American Women In Cinema Organization, Inc. (AAWIC), Terra Renee has utilized her strong background in filmmaking to serve as a continuous support for the vibrant work of women. Before she founded AAWIC, Terra studied filmmaking and film directing at the School of Visual Arts. Upon completion of her studies, Ms. Renee associate produced several independent films including, Island Alicia, a feature which was the official selection of the Cannes Film Festival UN Certain Regard category. Besides Terra’s film production success, she interned at Universal Pictures and served as a judge for some of Hollywood’s most prestigious awards such as the Emmy Awards, Student Academy Awards Oscars, New York Film Festival and NATPE. In addition, she has successfully Produce the Women of Excellence Salute Awards Hosted by Morgan Stanley and have created a platform for women of color filmmakers during the Sundance Film Festival with a partnership with the Utah Film Studios.

Ms. Renee was featured in Essence Magazine representing the Wal-Mart Voices of Color Film Series. In addition, she was the recipient of 2011 NAACP Woman of the Year Award, as well as the 2012 Bill McCreary Living Legend Award, the 2013 Keeping the Dream Award presented by the prestigious youth organization, Jump Start, the 2014 Bridge Builder Award from the United African Coalition, 2017 “Woman on a Mission” Award, The Total Faith Network 2017 Dorothy Dandridge Image Award, 2017 Promo Consulting Group in Partnership with the Nelson Mandela Award in Paris and the 2020 Ambassadorship Award from the Jefferson Foundation. Ms. Renee was a Fellow recipient of the United Way and Baruch College Leadership of the Non-profit Sector program. She studied Contract Law and Women Making History at Harvard University Online Certificate program. She sits on the Executive Board of UNESCO NYS and the African Women for Good Governance a member of the American Diabetes Association Committee and a United Nations Delegate for CSW 63. Ms. Renee contributed to the book entitled, “Michelle Obama’s Impact on African American Women and Girls.” She is Executive Producing a documentary on American Gospel Icon, Marion Williams, “What’s In a Name: The Alfredo Versace Story” and the Jam Master Jay project amongst additional Film and TV projects.

Steven Rhim
Steven Rhim was defined as a pioneer by the “Atlanta Constitution” February 10th 1978, in an article
titled: “Steve Rhim making It Happen”. This article was a respone to the research that, the Atlanta
Constitution writing staff did as an answer to the new music phenomenon DISCO. Steve was not just a
great Dee Jay, he was also the founder of the “Atlanta Underground Record Pool” which was the 1st
Black record pool in the country. Atlanta was the market that became the innovation market of the Urban
music industry that needed cultivation, so Steve gave his all to oblige the needs. Another major factor
product was The “Music Guide Magazine” which was the S.E. Music markets Music Magazine, which
covers were blessed by Artist such as: TLC, OUTCAST, BOBBY BROWN, DRU HILL, JAGGED EDGE,
etc.

Calvin Dupree
Calvin Dupree is and still will be known as the “Ring Master”, a title he earned from being one of the
founders and Ring Master of the famous “Universoul Circus”. Cal also was part of one of the first Hip Hop
shows to tour the S E of the United States. He began as a DJ for the Legendary Mr. V’s Figure 8 club,
that became the premier Night club of the Atlanta music scene. Today Cal has many projects that are
following these same foot steps, one being the “Vice President” of the “Black Radio Hall of Fame”.

Brian Lassiter
Brian Lassiter started out as a record promoter for Major, and independent record lables. Working with
independent lables Brian realized that the all needed structure, and strategy, so Brian became one of the
first independent consultants. His everyday task was to educate, and train lable administrators, artist,
and artist management on how to manuver their companies into a position to make much needed
revenue. Today Brian has expanded his talents to other areas such as, beverage, and food
retail,distribution, with Kroger super markets as one of his main outlets.
