Roll Pin Punch
Synopsis: Two MMA fighters, both women of color, spar with one another while flashbacks haunt their every punch, every kick, every takedown. These moments illustrate their motivation behind why they took up the sport in the first place. One fighter deals with homophobia from her mother while the other suffers from her father’s constant psychological abuse. This is a story of redemption. Second chances reunite the fighters with their parents. No one is perfect and we cannot expect parents to do the right thing every time. They come with their own complexities from their unique perspectives. Family is permanent and it’s okay to have conflict, that is how we grow.

Director's Bio

Debbie Vu is an award-winning documentary and narrative filmmaker who runs a multimedia production company called IronWorx Media. IronWorx Media has a robust internship program which provides specialized educational experiences to budding filmmakers and paid filmmaking opportunities for more seasoned team members. After she graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a degree in electronic journalism and media studies and production, she traveled to Malawi in Africa with a team of 6 other creatives to produce documentary content for P&G’s Children’s Safe Drinking Water. It was that experience that sealed her fate as a nonfiction, non-scripted storyteller. Debbie has had a fruitful ten-year career in the narrative space as an actor, screenwriter, director-for-hire, producer, videographer, and editor.
