Synopsis: Last Nomads of Everest is a documentary exploring the wilderness of the snowy Himalayas. Covered in the snow is the Nurkum village that lies around Everest region at the height of 4000 m above sea level. This documentary tells the story of the last Sherpa family holding the traditional Sherpa profession of Mountain cow husbandry in the most extreme weather condition. Aesthetically presented, this documentary tries to show the redemption and pain while holding the old way of tradition in the backdrop of modernist way of life. The poignant and spiritual glimpses of the Sherpa village, the people, the amazing costumes and their religious ceremonies are the glares of this cinematic treat.

Director's Statement

Set in the remote Everest region of Nepal, the documentary tries to tell a story of a Nomad Sherpa family who are the last people in the region to hold the traditional Nomadic profession. Shot at an altitude of 4000 m above sea level in a challenging weather condition, It tells a story of their pain and struggle while holding the values of centuries old tradition and culture.

This is a half an hour documentary focusing on the lives of people living in the outskirts of Everest. As Mount Everest remains as one of the top tourist destinations around the world, there are few places and events around its region which are unheard of. This documentary tries to show a story of a family who holds a traditional sherpa profession ,i.e. Mountain cow husbandry in the most challenging weather condition. In the backdrop of growing modernity, this special family still believes in their centuries old culture and tradition.

Director's Bio

Nischal Poudyal is a Kathmandu based independent filmmaker. Graduated in 2012 from Tribhuwan University in English Literature, He started his career writing for a short film called “Back or Continue” in 2009. This short film was screened at the prestigious Kathmandu International film festival in December, 2009. He then directed his first short film called “Shuvaratri” in 2011. The film won the Jury prize at the Nepal Army Film Competition in 2011. In 2015, he wrote, edited and directed his first feature length film called “Riingata”. Based on a true story about the students involved in the Nepali civil war, the film won numerous awards at the international film festivals. One being the Best film at the Tryon International Film Festival, North Carolina in October of 2015. He then wrote, edited and directed his second feature film project called “Lama La” in 2016. This film was also well received in film festivals around the world and is awaiting some festivals to be screened. He is currently busy on the post production of his latest short documentary called “Last Nomads of Everest”.
