Synopsis: In this “sequel” to all romantic comedies, the honeymoon is over. First came love. Then came marriage. Then separation, and to add insult to injury, now an IRS audit.

Unemployed, tailed by the IRS and hilariously pathetic without the love of his life, Jake tries his best to drown himself with booze and girls. Ally tries to stay afloat with work, and yoga where she meets the enigmatic yogi, True (Billy Beck.) Despite both their efforts to move on and escape their reality, Jake and Ally are forced to sit and deal with the audit process, and each other. Receipts are more than money spent… they’re a record of memories made. As they sort through the last years of receipts and the memories they inevitably carry, the inharmonious couple begins to understand what went wrong.

‘Starting From Scratch’ merges comedy with drama in an honest depiction of two individuals simply fumbling, at times tumbling through life, and discovering that when it comes to relationships, hindsight is 50/50.

Director's Statement

“The notion that ‘It’s funny because it’s true’ doesn’t often seem to apply to romantic comedies. Many relationship comedies tend to focus on hi-concept situations while story and characters don’t get the chance to truthfully develop because they’re too busy falling into pools and wedding cakes, or contending with some high-stakes bet. I wanted to tell an honest story that allows the audience to hang out with the characters and get to really know them. Just like making new friends, you’ll feel compassion, empathy, and fully relate to who they are and experience something with them. By the end, it’s not about taking sides, winning or losing; for better or worse, it’s about coming to terms with how falling in and out of love affects our behavior.”

Director's Bio

Originally from NYC, James has lived in LA since 2000 where he took his east coast training and brand new SAG card, and pursued his film and television career. Since that time, he has worked as an actor in over twenty TV shows, a dozen feature films, twenty commercials, and countless shorts and webisodes. He’s also worked nearly every job behind the camera on set and is also a proficient editor. He
won a few awards for acting and directing, but his proudest achievement thus far is completing this film.
