Na Forest Lim (b. 1986 / FKS Frenette) is a gender non-conforming artist based in Detroit. They were born and raised in Seoul, South Korea. Growing up they spent a lot of their time reading and drawing manga, which helped inspire their sense of visual storytelling. Na started documenting their friends and family when their were 15 years old with their little Sony camcorder. It was their birthday present from their dad. They grew up not naturally exposed to emotional intimacy. Filmmaking was their love language, their gift in abstract form, expressing their care and gratitude to their loved ones. That remains true today. In their career as a documentarian, they’ve told stories that centered on social issues in their home country. They moved to Detroit in 2014. Their international background has helped them develop a uniquely compassionate and sensitive perspective.
Na dedicates their labor to healing, humanity, and honesty. Their creative purpose is discovering, understanding, and shifting belief systems. They practice sincere & unexpected visual storytelling that shares the unique and beautiful truths of 2SLGBTQIA+, BIPOC, disabled, and other underserved individuals. The goal of their artwork is sharing the community experience, narratives of healing, and safely bringing people together in real life — in order to change societal narratives. Their approach is to always consider the meaning of the story while trying to find the emotional heart to move their audience. Na’s films portray enduring truths, and are made with commitment to the pride, success and wellbeing of their clients (talent/collaborators/protagonists/characters) throughout the creative process. It begins with heartfelt conversations, deep listening and intimate collaboration.
