Synopsis: At the end of WW1, the equine war heroes who had served so faithfully were mostly abandoned on the foreign soil where they served their armies, including thousands of former British war horses who were abandoned by the army in Cairo, Egypt. They had been sold into lives of hard labor and utter misery. Dorothy Brooke, wife of a British Army officer, discovered these animals and set her mind to rescuing them. By the time she finished, 5,000 of these equine war heroes had been rescued and given a peaceful end to their suffering. Today, the charity that is named in honor, Brooke, is the world’s largest international equine welfare charity.
