Synopsis: The Brotherhood of the Camargue Horsemen, also known as gardians or ‘cowboys of the Riviera,’ have tended to the distinctive white horses of Camargue since the 1500s. Living deep within the Camargue Marshland and far from any metropolitan area, the gardians have earned the trust of these horses, and their lives revolve around the tradition of caring for them. These are wild animals “born from big spaces” and the symbiotic relationship of the gardians and horses has had a huge impact on shaping both of their identities.

Director's Statement

Drew Doggett’s award-winning film direction utilizes narrative and storytelling, often starting from the perspective of unusual sources ripe for urgent consideration. In each work, his goal is to create a sensory-driven experience for viewers through rhythmic visual language.

Doggett uses film as a portal to locations unsung, difficult, or near-impossible to access, allowing viewers to step out of their world and into another before these places disappear without recognition due to modernity, urbanization, or inevitable environmental damage. Whether the voice is a remote island and its wild equine inhabitants, a torch-bearer of a near-obsolete tradition or lifestyle, or ever-changing sand dunes, Doggett’s films unlock an engaging and encompassing doorway into the sensitivities and traditions of his subjects. His directing style exercises the inclusive aspects of film to help the public recognize our shared humanity throughout the world within his developed and nuanced palette of storylines, colors, and music. Doggett’s aim is to uncover these places and offer his audience a dynamic and transformative vantage point to open discussion and provoke change through awareness developed with a fine-tuned aesthetic.
