The Parasite Journey Of The Horse Episode 2 Ascarids
The second episode in a new series from equine parasitologist Martin Nielsen looking at the parasites a horse encounters in its life takes a look at equine ascarids, or roundworms.
If you haven’t seen the first episode of “The Parasite Journey of the Horse”, go take a look now, as Dr Nielsen is discussing the parasites in the order of appearance.
This latest episode looks at roundworms or ascarids, which are the next to affect a foal. There are actually two — Parascaris equorum and Parascaris univalens.

Spotlight Rescue Series The Abacos Island Horse

Bruce spent time over a period of two years working with Nunki, the last mare of the Abaco breed. Since she was in fact still wild, he was called in to help Mimi work with her on the stressful aspects of collecting eggs for future breeding and insemination. From handling during vet exams to stress-free loading into the breeding chute, the less stress she felt during the process, the greater the chance of success. Unfortunately, Nunki died in 2015 before the insemination took place. On a positive note, however, the organization was able to collect her eggs for future cloning projects..

In the latest episode of “The Parasite Journey of the Horse” series by equine parasitologist Martin Nielsen, we learn about the good doctor’s “pet parasite” — the bloodworm or Strongylus vulgaris.
“It’s the one I’ve worked with the most and I did my entire PhD on it, so I’m really excited to share this knowledge,” Nielsen says. He describes it as the “marinara meat sauce of parasites that doesn’t seem to be the smartest of the bunch”.
