Director's Statement

This script took shape during quarantine, when so many parents were struggling with small children at home. I heard many friends complain of the difficulties of juggling home schooling with their jobs and other responsibilities. At the same time, I’d seen many films and shows that dealt with bitter divorces, but the parents were always adamant about keeping custody of their children. I thought to myself, what if they just didn’t want to anymore? I also wanted to honor the incredible fight scene between Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson in Marriage Story. It tickled me to think that a fight scene so bitter and intense could be underscored with some humor. What results might not be funny to everyone, it might even be distasteful to some, but my goal with filmmaking is to make the audience feel something. I hope Divorce Story encourages you to do that.
