Director's Statement

I Put the Bi in Bitter is a coming-of-age teen comedy digital series, that follows a bisexual teenager named Sam, and her lesbian BFF named Alex, as they navigate their lives through high school. Set during our current and present times, and inspired by the millennials and Gen-Z kids we see nowadays, this series explores being young, growing up, and all the other awkward moments and shenanigans that come from that.

What I’ve noticed lacking in LGBT media is its accessibility to a younger audience. I Put the Bi in Bitter is lighthearted, cute, and kid-friendly. As a gay woman myself, I really want to normalized being gay, especially while being young, in a way that’s funny, relatable, and accessible to a modern audience. Not all LGBT content has to be dramatic, or tragic, or R-rated, or sexual.

Many LGBT stories nowadays also focus on the main character coming to terms with their identity, and finding the courage to come out. Now that’s inspiring, and powerful, and emotional, and great! But what happens after that? What about the kids who have already gone through that, but now just want to start living their best gay lives? That’s what I Put the Bi in Bitter is about.

Accurate representation starts behind the scenes, so this series is my love letter to women telling their own stories and gay people telling their own stories. This series is a product of diversity both on and off screen. This series is a celebration of minority film, independent film, millennial film, comedy writing, and episodic storytelling. Most importantly, this series is for all the young people who grew up just like me, without seeing themselves on screen.
