Director's Statement

I was interested in using the medium and language of film to express what it’s like to live with trauma and grief. The film is largely informed by my own experience with said afflictions, which is a day by day battle. As anyone who has PTSD knows, when you’re triggered it can bring you almost physically back to the moment of trauma. Cinema is uniquely equipped, I felt, to depict the vicerality of living with immense trauma. Ultimately though, I didn’t make this film for any tidily explainable reason. After the loss of my brother, Addai, I didn’t know if filmmaking was still something I could do. It just seemed so small. When the inspiration for melatonin came, I knew that this was a film that I not only could make, but I had to make.
