Director's Statement

Having writer’s block is a bit like not being able to tell someone that you’re in love with them. You want to say something, something dying to come out of you but somehow there’s a wall that’s too scary to climb, keeping it all inside. SPELL IT OUT IN NEON explores this moment and what it feels like to finally break down that wall. Screenwriter, Samantha Lester, first brought an early stage of the script to me and I was immediately intrigued. During the course of development, I watched as she bravely re-worked the material (inspired by a real relationship) and noticed an interesting thing occur: the more she was able to mine the reality of this character, her other passion began to take off. There she was, all over Los Angeles sharing her street art and poetry on corners and telephone poles. (My favorite piece is on the corner of Moorpark and Tujunga.) I realized that these were connected and we needed her art in this movie. As the character stands up for herself and stops living in the hope that Brian will “like her back” she is able to create and find her real true love: her art. The intensity of the love one experiences in their youth can seem like the most important thing that has ever happened, often distracting us from what truly matters. I hope young women will see themselves in Beth and be inspired to go after what truly makes them fulfilled.

Director's Bio

Tammy Minoff
Director / Executive Producer

After growing up on Broadway, Tammy (a native New Yorker) continued her film and T.V. work in L.A., where she wrote a play that launched her into her next chapter: writing, directing and producing. Her play, PERENNIAL was produced in Los Angeles with a sold out run and was the source material for her directorial debut, LIMERENCE, which won Best Feature at the SOHO Film Festival, Best Audience Award at the other Venice Film Festival and most recently received a Film Threat Best Romantic Comedy Award for 2021. LIMERENCE was picked up by Gravitas and was released worldwide in 2020 and can be seen on most platforms including Amazon Prime Video. As an actress, she is known for her nuanced performances in indie films such as the Sundance hit, I AM NOT A HIPSTER, directed by Destin Cretton. Currently she has several projects in development including a new comedy series with producing partner Brad Zions. She is very excited for Spell it Out in Neon to have its festival run!
